Senior Strategic Consultant to aid tourism's recovery

Strategy · Austin (remote), Texas
Department Strategy
Employment Type Full-time (100%)
Minimum Experience Senior Manager/Supervisor

There’s only one thing the tourism industry needs more right now than travelers and open borders - and that’s strategic and creative leaders.

After an all-time peak of global travel in 2019, the last year has decimated the industry in many ways, not least of which has been stripping away much of its intellectual capital, as so many people have had no choice but to find jobs in other industries.

It is the best possible landscape for new, innovative and progressive thinking, as it’s been widely acknowledged that simply reverting to the pre-pandemic volume of travelers is not only unsustainable for the industry, but also unhealthy for the planet.

We see that as a tremendous business opportunity for our company, and with the right candidate to fill the key role of Senior Strategic Consultant, we will be even more well-positioned to capitalize on it.

This will be one of the most important hires we’ve made in recent years - someone who, based on experience and attitude will be able to help our clients imagine and navigate a very different and more positive future for their destinations.

To that end, Destination Think is seeking an experienced strategic consultant with direct experience working at or with a destination marketing organization (DMO), and exceptional skills in planning, facilitating and guiding a DMO through its continued development and adoption of updated approaches to tourism as a responsible and viable economic sector. The breadth of work we do for our DMO clients ranges from a modern creative campaign to multi-year strategic planning with stakeholders from across a destination.

Knowledge of and a passion for the tourism industry is required. A strong desire to be an extension of our clients’ teams to help them think, plan and create is mandatory. Preference will be given to candidates with senior-level experience and who have held positions in a DMO, who have a background in travel/tourism, and/or who have experience in strategic consulting organizations.

In your cover letter, please address the following: A lot of DMOs are using this pandemic time to reflect on the state of tourism and what the future would look like. What do you consider the key factors that can drive positive, permanent change for the industry? And what are some of the most important principles DMOs should operate under moving forward?

Destination Think is an international consultancy and marketing agency that works exclusively with the destination marketing industry and has locations in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and the United States. For this role, you would be joining our team in the United States. Your employment will be based from our business in Austin, Texas, but this is a fully remote position.

You have experience in - and are excited by - the work that’s most essential to supporting and leading our clients:

  • You’re a thought leader with an ability to inspire others, notably in/around topics related to tourism and destination marketing organizations
  • You have a “whole brain” approach to research, operating equally comfortably on the quant and qual sides of the house - you’re experienced and enjoy conducting, leading or overseeing various forms of research (surveys, interviews, workshops, focus groups, background review, etc.)
  • You wade through stacks of data like a hot knife through butter
  • You’re skilled at leading ideation (internal and with client) and guiding strategic choices
  • You have experience leading/overseeing the development of a plan and capturing, codifying, presenting and supporting it; the types of plans can include long-term destination planning, marketing plans, brand strategy, Place DNA®, destination development, etc.
  • You are as excited about getting your hands dirty as you are teaching others the best way to do so
  • You excel at de-complicating things, making the complex easily understandable
  • You’re an ego-free collaborator, assimilate well and are comfortable in an environment where the team contributes to all outcomes in order to make everyone better
  • You freaking love travel

Some other things we’re looking for (ideal but not necessary - bring ‘em if you got ‘em):

  • Be based in the US and have strategic experience in the US Tourism industry, in particular at or with a DMO
  • Bring experience both in long-term destination visioning and also brand/marketing strategy
  • Have led a small consulting practice, overseeing/guiding/modeling best practices for other consultants

Genuine bonus points come from:

  • Understanding of environmental impact in strategic planning, particularly measuring and mitigating carbon footprint,
  • Understanding of general social justice issues and ability to apply them to org planning and destination marketing,
  • Understanding of community health in tourism management (resident quality of life).
